Cybersecurity Awareness
Together, we are all responsible for enhancing the security of our digital environments across UM and beyond. Given the ever-evolving nature of threats to both personal and institutional data, it is never too soon to learn how to help secure our information and protect against cyberattacks.
We encourage you integrate key security practices into your daily routine by following these recommendations from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) campaign to :
Key Cybersecurity Practices

A strong password is your first line of defense. To ensure your passwords are resilient against attacks,
- Make them long: Aim for at least 12 to 16 characters. Longer passwords are more difficult for attackers to crack.
- Make them random: Avoid using easily guessable information, such as common words or phrases. Use a mix of letters (both upper and lower case), numbers, and special characters in random combinations. Alternatively, use a memorable phrase of unrelated words.
- Make them unique: Do not reuse passwords across different sites or systems. Each account should have a unique password to minimize the risk of a breach spreading to other accounts.
Consider using a password manager to generate and store your complex passwords securely. .

Phishing attacks are one of the most common ways cybercriminals gain access to personal information. Always be cautious with unsolicited messages and verify the source before clicking on links or opening attachments. If you receive a suspicious email, report it using the Report Message tool in Outlook.
