Faculty Affiliates
Who is a Faculty Affiliate?
Faculty Affiliates and Griz Visitors are individuals formally associated with an academic department or organization at the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ for the purposes of research, instruction, service, or academic oversight. These are courtesy appointments for those who support the instructional, research, creative, or service missions of the University but are not employed by UM.
Examples include:

Serving on a graduate student committee

Precepting undergraduate or graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ (e.g., in Nursing or Health Sciences)

Contributing to research or creative projects
Note: Current UM employees, enrolled Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, and individuals with other types of University affiliation are not eligible for Faculty Affiliate status.
Faculty Affiliate Classifications
Standard Faculty Affiliates: Contribute to instruction, research, or service in collaboration with an academic department or unit. These must be reviewed and approved by the sponsoring department's chair and dean.
Clinical Faculty Affiliates: Non-UM-employed professionals who supervise or mentor UM Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in clinical or applied learning settings. This status is common for health professions preceptors. These must be reviewed and approved by the sponsoring department's chair and dean.
Clinical Research Affiliates: Clinicians or external professionals involved in clinical research projects under the supervision of a UM principal investigator. These must be reviewed and approved by the UM PI or their designee, department chair, and dean.
Process
New Affiliates
New faculty affiliates can be approved at any time during the year by completing the . To complete the application, you will need to provide:
- A summary of the applicant's qualifications and expected academic contributions,
- Applicant's CV or resume,
- Assigned chair/director and the unit dean.
Once the electronic form has been routed and signed by designated approvers, it will be routed to the Provost's Office for final approval and processing.
Renewals
Faculty affiliate appointments automatically expire on September 30th of each year. The Office of the Provost will request renewal of affiliate statuses each July. The Office of the Provost will then work with departments on approving the renewal requests.
Services

Campus Recreation membership includes access to the Fitness & Recreation Center, Grizzly Pool, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Programs (trips, classes and equipment rental), fitness classes, personal training and rock climbing wall. More on how to join may be found on the .

Once the Affiliate or Griz Visitor has completed the approval process and is entered in Banner with a University ID, the person can obtain a Griz Card at the Griz Card office in the University Center.

Twenty-four hours after the affiliate has completed the approval process and is entered in Banner with a University ID, the person can utilize online services.
To access these services the NetID should be used for authentication purposes. .

All Affiliates can go to GrizPortal and set their UMontana alias to point to an email account of their choice to receive emergency emails. They can also enter a cell phone number to receive emergency text messages.
