Honors Advising
Honors academic advisors serve as secondary advisors to your major advisors. Honors advisors typically meet with Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ annually about honors requirements, registration, experiential opportunities, degree composition, and general mentorship. The DHC also has dedicated career advising for honors Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in all majors. The DHC team provides honors academic and career advising through 1:1 advising meetings, group advising sessions, and regular workshop series. Students can schedule directly with advisors through Navigate.

The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥’s advising community consists of many layers of support for Ñý¼§Ö±²¥; most Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ will have multiple advisors to support their academic journey. Students who are undecided about which academic programs to pursue can access primary advising services through the Undergraduate Advising Center. The Undergraduate Advising Center on the UM Campus is an excellent resource for questions related to advising policies and procedures, timelines, deadlines, and courses. They also have several advisors on staff who can meet with Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ for 1:1 appointments.
Students can schedule advising meetings and communicate with their advising team through Navigate. Many advisors are also happy to schedule meetings and communicate with Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ through their UM email addresses.
Primary Advising vs. Secondary Advising
Once a student has identified and declared a major, they are assigned to a primary advisor in the appropriate academic department. Students should work closely with their primary advisor/s to register for classes in their major, plan ahead and access additional resources at UM. It is critical to meet with primary advisors at least once a semester. To register for courses, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ need an advising PIN (6-digit number) to access their registration— new advising PINS are generated every semester for each UM student and are released to Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ by primary advisors upon approval of the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥’ academic plans for the coming semester.
Secondary advisors—including honors advisors—are assigned as Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ join programs (e.g., honors, athletics, pre-professional programs) and/or declare minors and certificates. Typically, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ meet with primary advisors first when planning their academic trajectory to ensure that they are on track with the requirements in their major. Secondary advisors typically provide guidance and support for academic pursuits outside of the scope of a student’s major.
Honors Advising
Honors advisors specialize in ensuring that DHC Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ are on track with their honors trajectory as well as learning about and taking advantage of enriching opportunities at UM. Honors advisors are experts at helping DHC make connections on the UM campus. Students are welcome to bring questions, ideas, and concerns to their honors advising team—if we don’t know the answer, or there is a more appropriate person on campus to connect with, we will help facilitate that connection.

The Davidson Honors College began offering dedicated career development programming in the fall of 2017 through philanthropic support from Ian and Nancy Davidson, who believe that an excellent education leads to postgraduate success and the development of informed, engaged citizens in Montana and beyond.
Mission
The purpose of focusing on career development is to promote the postgraduate success of our Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ and alumni. To that end, we:
- Engage our Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in developing and accomplishing postgraduate goals that align with their academic and personal interests, while also maximizing their positive impact on society;
- Promote opportunities for our Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to develop professional skills throughout their academic experiences; and
- Connect our Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ with professional career advisors, alumni mentors, and relevant employers and/or graduate programs.
What We Do
- Conduct personalized career advising and strategic planning with Ñý¼§Ö±²¥.
- Lead seminars that include resume building, cover letter review, and techniques for success in various interview settings.
- Assist Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in securing internships, jobs, and graduate school placements that align with career goals.
- Host engagement opportunities with private industry and public sector employers at the state, regional, and national levels.
- Assist Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in building – online and offline – customized portfolios that effectively showcase their skills and work.
Personal and Professional Development Course (HONR 291, offered Fall)
We like to say this class is a gift to your future selves since you will be working on things you will have to do anyway (think: resumes, cover letters, personal statements, interview prep) but with support and a little fun along the way! This is a great course for transfer Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ and an awesome opportunity to get a sense of honors at UM and prepare yourself for your remaining time before graduation.
In our Personal & Professional seminar, we’ll be covering all the things you need to know and do to apply for jobs, scholarships, and generally prepare yourself to reach your amazing academic and career goals. What’s especially great about this course is that you’ll not only have our support, but you will also build a peer network that you’ll be able to work with in the fall semester and beyond.
- For personal development, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ consider the big picture of what motivates them, their passions and goals, and how what opportunities can help achieve those goals. Students will explore the components of external scholarship and graduate applications and how to be successful; including curriculum vitae, personal statements, project descriptions, and how to work with mentors. Additionally, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ will receive support from their instructors and build a peer-network.
- For professional development, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ will look at what motivates them professionally, what kind of leader they want to be, and what they are interested in learning about themselves and doing after college, whether it’s graduate school or their first job. Students will learn how to build resumes, develop a professional online presence, and practice interview skills, network with alumni and community leaders, and more.

Students in the Davidson Honors College receive priority registration status, which allows them to register before the general UM student body. Please reference the UM Office of the Registrar’s Priority Class Registration Timetable for up-to-date information on when priority registration will open for the coming term.
